Timothy Francis Holmes
Timothy Francis Holmes died peacefully at Saratoga Hospital on Monday, November 4, 2024, surrounded by his siblings.
Born in New Fairfield, CT, in 1964, Tim was the fourth of six children to the late Gerard P. and Ann (Werner) Holmes. Tim was raised in Scranton, PA, where he graduated from St. Paul School and Scranton Preparatory High School. Growing up, Tim was a District All-Star, PA state qualifying cross country and track runner, and the founding drummer for the locally renowned band, The Inturnz. Tim loved music, often tapping out favorite numbers by Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, and Steely Dan.
Tim was a bright light with big brown eyes and a mischievous smile. Many funny stories could be told of shenanigans with siblings and friends in the Green Ridge neighborhood.
Tim’s interest in food chemistry and baking techniques led him to the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in 1986, where he developed a marvelous palate and his skills as a pastry chef.
He met his wife, Suzy Quillio, the first day at CIA, and their romance began. Their early years included Tim flying from Boston to NYC to see Suzy. Later, they moved together to Boston to follow their culinary careers, then finally settled in Greenwich, NY. Some of Tim’s favorite jobs included baking at The Equinox Hotel, Manchester, VT, where he made many life-long friends; and at the NYS Governor's mansion during the Pataki administration.
Over his life, Tim made wedding cakes for family and friends from the Hudson Valley (Paige & Shay) to San Diego (April & James) and Los Gatos (Cathy & Todd).
Tim loved the outdoors, especially visits to the Battenkill for rope-swinging, swimming, paddling, and fly fishing. He enjoyed hiking, camping, golf, cycling and basketball, and he always looked forward to his annual fishing trip with his lifelong best friend, Steve Cooper. He had a wonderful laugh and a twinkle in his eye. He was the king of kibitz.
Tim is survived by his wife of 37 years, Suzy Quillio; his siblings Karen Holmes of Forest Hill, MD; Nancy Holmes of Clarks Summit, PA; Todd (and Cathy) Holmes of Bethlehem, PA; Susan (and Jeff) Hunter of Clarks Summit, PA; and Patrick (and Missy) Holmes of Avoca, PA. He was also loved by his in-laws Lou Quillio, Ajijica, Mexico, and Pamela Schmuhl, Hampton, NH; and many wonderful nieces, and nephews.
A gathering will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024 from 3-6pm at the Cambridge Depot, 6 Broad Street, Cambridge, NY, 12866.
Donations in memory of Tim can be made to Battenkill Conservancy or Comfort Food Community, both in Greenwich, NY.
